Studios shuts down file-sharing site Openload

Post by Geths » November 1st 2019 - 1:49 am

Several major studios have been successful in obtaining a settlement that shuts down file-sharing site Openload, one that operated out of numerous European locales and got more traffic than the likes of Hulu or HBO Go.

The Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) – a coalition of the five major studios, plus Netflix, Amazon, and several other content providers – has been pursuing the case for several months.

Recently they brought a legal action in Germany against the operators who also operate the similar Streamango. They agreed to shutter both sites and pay a ‘significant damage award’. Openload has now been redirected to ACE’s website which briefly crashed due to the heavy volume of traffic.

The site, which snagged both advertising revenue and paid users who uploaded videos based on the number of downloads, provided content to 36 of the top 50 pirate sites in the world.

If they had their way it would be a life sentence if you own a Vcr or Dvr. If you get a car and repaint it and add mag wheels and modify the engine thats technically copywrite infringement because you altered the way it was made but thats ok because it's not some money hungry studio getting rich off someone elses creativity, look at CBS & Paramount and their dumb startrek suits. I say if it's already on the net it's fair game, like walking down the street and finding a coin on the pavement. I didn't put it there I just picked up what I found, now if I try to sell it for profit thats an entirely different story, but keep it for myself who cares.

I've got no real trouble with copyrights. People deserve to be paid for work.
My problem is the excess they go to. Too much mark up and too many years of protection.
Bad for the consumer, bad for the economy.
Boycott the Boycotters!!!
