I'm nearly crying over this

Post by voetsak » February 4th 2017 - 12:59 am

Every time I send an email to my family in America where they use .aol, it gets sent back to me.
Yesterday I wrote 2 thank you letters for their good wishes. By last night they were both back, with this same thing ...
"Your message was not delivered because the destination computer does not support electronic mail (SMTP). Correct any mistakes in the address and try sending the message again"
I've used the same address for many years!
Also another 4 came back today.
This has been going on for weeks.

Please can anyone tell me what to do. I'm so upset. I have to thank them, and/or let them know what's going on.
Please try, I'm distraught.
Thank you xoxox

Some server between you and the sender could not make an SMTP connection between it and it's next-in-line router. You cannot address this issue. Only the owners of the routers can.

I will try to help U. Send me a email at aol and see if I get it.
drcoolmor@aim.com which is AOL :wink2:

But you received mail from them?

What mail provider do you have yourself?

Thank you drcoolmor . I've sent you a letter

Yes OxA110C, I can receive - and send - to everyone else. Just not to .aol
I'm in Australia and I use Telstra. My emails go from bigpond.com

Another one just came back saying this

This Message was undeliverable due to the following reason:

"Your message was not delivered because the destination computer refused to accept it (the error message is reproduced below). This type of error is usually due to a mis-configured account or mail delivery system on the destination computer; however, it could be caused by your message since some mail systems refuse messages with invalid header information, or if they are too large.
Your message was rejected by mailin-04.mx.aol.com for the following reason:

5.2.1 : AOL will not accept delivery of this message."

What have I done? I sit here minding my own business, and obeying the rules, and this happens.

Thanks so much drcoolmor and OxA110C, for doing something to help me. xx

Sometimes mail servers implement something called Grey listing. That means it acts like it has blacklisted the server, but on the second attempt it allows the mails to get through. If your mail server is blacklisted at AOL, you'll have to contact your mail provider and AOL to resolve the problem.

I got rejected on the server too, but probably for a good reason as I tried to send a mail directly ;)

All it said was: 550 5.3.0 The recipient does not like your mail. Don't try again.

I did lots of things that could have gotten the mail rejected. Firstly I connected through Tor. Secondly I used a fake sender (which is most likely what was the problem).

Code: Select all

$ torify telnet mailin-01.mx.aol.com 25
Trying 152.163.0.99...
Connected to 152.163.0.99.
Escape character is '^]'.
HELO inbox.lv
220 csds.local ESMTP
250 csds.local
MAIL FROM john@inbox.lv
250 2.1.0 Ok
RCPT TO drcoolmor@aim.com
250 2.1.5 Ok
DATA
354 End data with <CR><LF>.<CR><LF>
Just a test

.
550 5.3.0 The recipient does not like your mail. Don't try again.
QUIT
221 Bye
Connection closed by foreign host.
E-Mail addresses that end with @bigpond.com is allowed to send only from IP addresses listed in the TXT field of the bigpond.com DNS entry.

Code: Select all

bigpond.com. 86400 IN TXT "v=spf1 ip4:61.9.168.0/24 ip4:61.9.189.0/24 ip4:61.9.169.0/24 ip4:61.9.190.0/24 ip4:203.38.21.0/24 ip4:144.135.11.32/27 ip4:203.36.137.224/27 ip4:203.36.172.96/27 ?all"
bigpond.com. 86400 IN TXT "v=msv1 t=9b18428b79651e4ca37332871d6696"
The mail-exchange server for bigpond.com is:

Code: Select all

bigpond.com. 86400 IN MX 10 extmail.bigpond.com
The two IP addresses for extmail.bigpond.com is:

Code: Select all

extmail.bigpond.com. 86400 IN A 203.36.172.106
extmail.bigpond.com. 86400 IN A 203.36.137.234
Those two IP addresses should be in the allowed ip4:203.36.137.224/27 which are IP addresses from 203.36.137.224 - 255 and the other ip4:203.36.172.96/27 which is 203.36.172.96 - 223.

Are you sending from webmail or your own e-mail client? If you send from you own e-mail client you might have to check which SMTP (outgoing) mail-server you are using.

0xA110C you have gone to SO much trouble for me and I am immensely grateful.
Is it okay to post you my IP address here?
Then you can see if I'm an 'allowed' person.
Tomorrow, Monday, I'll have to contact bipond and AOL and ask if I'm on the blacklist, and ask them to resolve the problem. Also, I 'll ask about what you've shown me. I'm sending from my own email-client (Is that bigpond?)
Now I'll check which SMTP (outgoing) mail-server I'm using.
I had to laugh over the fake email you sent.
Thank you very much for all you've done for me. What a good and kind person you are.
I'll let you know how it goes.

You personal IP does not matter. Don't post it here. You as an individual are not being blacklisted. The thing that matters is the outgoing mail server you are using. That outgoing server must be in the list of allowed IPs in the DNS for the domain part of your e-mail address @bigpond.com

So when you know what the domain of your outgoing mail server is you can look up the IP and see if it is allowed to send e-mail for @bigpond.

I fear it is AOL who has chosen to put your mail host in a blacklist filter. If you're lucky it's the outgoing mail server that needs to be changed to a new one from your provider. Either way they are they are the ones you should contact first, and have them talk to AOL.

It was really no trouble. I just looked up the domains.

I hope you'll be able to fix it. I've been administrator on my own mail server before, and what those big mail providers do are sometimes really annoying. The worst ones are Microsoft Exchange/Outlook mail servers.

Just thought I'd give you an update.
I've written to the aol postmaster, and the bigpond one (for the 3rd time).
It's so depressing, but I must tell you, 0xA110C and drcoolmor, that I'm really very grateful for the help you've given me and for the time you've spent here, out of your real lives.
Thank you - many, many, times.
I'll keep you posted.

Re: Email to Yahoo address
Options

yesterday

Telstra engineers have confirmed that a small amount of email messages from BigPond customers, sent to @yahoo.com email addresses, may not be received. This is due to Yahoo’s email server rejecting some of these messages without a bounce-back message (as would normally be expected).

Telstra are working with Yahoo to have this issue resolved as soon as possible. You can attempt to send the email message again if it returns as this may succeed.

The problem is with Bigpond, and like others your going to have to complain!
