it's easy once you get the idea debz !

In a layer mask, black makes stuff transparent & white makes them opaque... & all the shades of grey in between adjust the transparency

So by using a soft brush, you can really blend in your layers

( using the layer masks is one of the most important thing to understand in photoshop IMO - it's incredibly useful )

have to agree... I never use the Eraser Tool... I always use a layer mask, especially since I'm using a pen tablet...

I'm right handed, so ..

Left hand on the mouse to zoom in and out of the image I'm working on with the scroll wheel.

Keyboard in the middle of the desk... to use the keys:
- X to switch back and forth between black and white.
- Spacebar to move around the image whilst zoomed right in.
- [ or ] to decrease or increase the brush size.
- D to reset the backgrnd and foregrnd colours to blk and wht.

Right hand holding the tablet pen to erase/restore any part of the image. The magic here is that the tablet pen has pressure sensitivity and you can really get some nice natural smooth edges on your render.

This never works for me. Every time I try it I either end up paint a black/grey line over my pic or I just make it really bright like I'm staring in to a thousand suns. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

You must make sure the layers mask is selected and not just the layer, so click on the mask in the selection and you'll see it highlighted like so:
