List of LAN games

Post by Atheo » December 3rd 2013 - 7:57 pm

These days every game developer seems to want their customers to use a centralised internet server. I would like to have your help compiling a list of LAN enabled games that does not require internet. I don't play much, so I depend very much on you gamers to help me.

I'll start out with one that is both gratis, free and runs on Linux, Windows and Mac.

I did a few LAN parties back in the day... but it was mostly CounterStrike & Starcraft back then

Not 100% sure, but I think you could try stuff like Left 4 Dead or Team Fortress 2
& I'm pretty sure strategy games are pretty good for LAN too ( age of empires, that kind of thing)

This is an interesting idea ofr a thread though - very cool :jrc:

I was looking up free LAN games a while back for a party, and came across several. The ones I tested seemed to work, but admittedly, I didn't have time to test most of them. Some of them require you to run a dedicated server in addition to the client software to work as a LAN only (no internet) game. Most of these games came from one of two websites that have links to download the free games along with how many can play and on what OSs. I don't know if posting other websites is a no-no on this board, so I'm not including those links, I do have them if you want them though.

Shooters (First Person) - Ace of Spades, Alien Arena, America's Army, AssaultCube, Build and Shoot, Enemy Territory, FEAR Combat, Hidden & Dangerous, Nexuiz, OpenArena, Paintball2, Sauerbraten, Smokin'Guns, Tremulous, Tribes 2, True Combat Elite, Urban Terror, Warsow, Wizard Duel 2
Shooters (Platform) - Soldat, Teeworlds
Shooters (Top Down) - Bloodmasters, Counter-Strike 2D

Strategy - Battle for Wesnoth (FRPG Game), Bontago (An Odd Board Game), Freeciv, Freecol, MegaGlest, Scorched3D, Spring RTS, UFO: Alien Invasion, Warzone 2100

Racing (First Person) - Armagetron Advanced (Like Tron Light Cycles game), Driving Speed 2, M3 Challenge, The Need for Speed, Swerve, Trackmania Nations Forever
Racing (Top Down) - Swerve

Arcade - The Bub's Brothers (Like Bubble Bobble), BZFlag, Charred Dirt, M.A.R.S. - A Ridiculous Shooter, Silver Knights (Like Capcom's Street Fighter type with robots), Solar Flare, Tanks 3D, TetriNET (8 player tetris, configurable)

Simulation - Gigalomania, OpenTTD, Farm Hands

Misc - At a Distance (an Odd Multiple Person Puzzle Experiment), Crossfire, Savage: The Battle for Newerth, Mini Golf Maniacs

I think these games were LAN playable, but not positive about that...no free versions, but they're so old, you can probably find a copy for download somewhere - TRON 2.0(FPS), Jedi Knight(FPS), Dark Forces(FPS), Worms 2(Platform), Civilisation 2000 (Strategy) and Civilisation 3000, 1502 AD (Strategy/Simulation)and 1602 AD

Unreal Tournament, Diablo, Strongholds, Quake. Only old games can be the best LAN games. I'm still fond of all these games
